THE PLAYERS

MIKURU SUZUKI

  • Mikuru Suzuki didn’t drop a set on her way to winning the title last year, but she was forced to come from behind to defeat Maria O’Brien in a tough round one encounter on Monday at the start of her 2020 World Championship campaign.
  • Suzuki lost the opening set against O’Brien without winning a leg, but she dug deep and showed her quality by turning the match around and finishing the game with an average of 84.92.
  • Consistent heavy scoring from Suzuki saw her hit eight scores of 140+ and two 180s during ten legs in her triumph against O’Brien.

ANASTASIA DOBROMYSLOVA

  • Anastasia Dobromyslova won her opening match against Sharon Prins without dropping a set but she was far from happy with her performance in the victory.
  • Dobromyslova’s average of 64.51 against Prins is the first time that she has recorded an average of under 65 in a World Championship match.
  • The three-time BDO Women’s world champion has a formidable record in the quarter-finals at this tournament with nine wins from her previous nine matches in the last eight at the BDO World Championship.

THE PREDICTION

This is a stand-out match between the defending champion Suzuki and Dobromyslova, who has three world titles to her name. Dobromyslova certainly has some improving to do on her performance in round one and it is likely that she will raise her game for this challenge. The problem facing Dobromyslova though is that Suzuki is also capable of stepping up a gear when needed and it is the Japanese star who is tipped to progress.
