• World Championship debutant Sebastian Steyer had an impressive run to the semi-finals at the BDO World Trophy this year where he defeated the likes of Ross Montgomery and Scott Mitchell.
• Steyer failed in his bid to win a PDC tour card at the start of 2019, though he did qualify for a PDC Euro Tour event in June where he lost to Chris Dobey in the opening round.

THE PREDICTION

There may be nerves evident as two World Championship newcomers go head-to-head in the opening match of the tournament. Although they have both had good runs in a BDO major this year, this is the biggest match of their careers. Vandenbogaerde’s extra consistency is predicted to just give him the edge.
