THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a fascinating second-round encounter between one of the elder statesman of the game and a player who is still looking to establish himself as one of the elite players on the circuit. There has been plenty of expectation placed on Max Hopp from a young age and he is lived up to that at times but it’s fair to say that he has underachieved overall. The German’s first-round win over Gordon Mathers showed that his game is in good shape though and he is certainly capable of progressing, but King warmed up for Ally Pally by reaching his first televised final for six years when he narrowly lost out to Michael van Gerwen at the Players Championship Finals. The veteran will therefore feel good about his chances here but whichever way this swings, a deciding set will likely be required.
