THE PREDICTION

11^th seed Daryl Gurney kicks off his World Championship campaign and there are many who fear this is as far as he will go given the underwhelming year he has had on the circuit. In terms of TV tournaments in 2020, a run to the semi-finals of the UK Open just prior to lockdown represents his best result but recent appearances have not gone so well as he crashed out of the first rounds of both the European Championship and the Players Championship Finals, so his preparation has hardly been ideal. Standing in his way is Limerick’s William O’Connor, who has established himself as a solid player over the past couple of years and is capable of high averages at times. He didn’t need to get out of second gear in his first-round win over Niels Zonneveld on Wednesday and he will need to up his game here, but he is capable of causing a surprise so backing this to go to a deciding set could be the way to approach this one in the betting markets.
