Steve Beaton is making a record 30 consecutive World Championship appearance at this tournament and he will be hoping to celebrate the occasion with an opening night win against Diogo Portela. The Bronzed Adonis may have slipped out of the top 32 in the rankings recently but he is still a very capable performer and he will be confident of success against the Brazlian qualifier who has yet to get further than the opening round in three previous appearances at Alexandra Palace. Portela can’t be written off entirely, but his lack of match action in top level competition this year could be a crucial factor. Beaton is tipped to delight his fans by moving into round two courtesy of a 3-1 victory.
