ROB CROSS
- 2018 World Champion Rob Cross claimed the second PDC major tournament win of his career when he captured the World Matchplay title in July with a win against Michael Smith in the final.
- His World Matchplay triumph came on the back of his runs to the Premier League and UK Open finals earlier this year so he will definitely be confident he can have a good run this week in Dublin.
- If he is to win this tournament, he will need to show a big improvement on his previous appearances at the Grand Prix. Cross is appearing for the third time and has yet to win a match having lost 2-0 to Steve Beaton in round one in both 2017 and 2018.
MENSUR SULJOVIC
- Mensur Suljovic has a good record at the World Grand Prix with three semi-final appearances under his belt in the last four years. The only time he hasn’t reached the semi-finals was in 2016 when he lost to Daryl Gurney in round one.
- The Austrian ace comes to Dublin in good form with a couple of tournament wins in September including one on home soil at the Austrian Darts Championship on the Euro Tour where he defeated Michael van Gerwen in the final.
- Suljovic has won five of his previous seven matches against Cross in TV tournaments and this includes winning all three of their knockout round matches on TV.
THE PREDICTION
This is a harsh draw for the players but a fascinating draw for the fans with two of the main contenders for the title facing off in round one, as both Cross and Suljovic capable of going all the way. Suljovic certainly seems to enjoy this format with three semi-final appearances in the last four years whereas Cross has yet to win a set in two previous appearances. With the Austrian looking more comfortable at this format he is tipped to win this enthralling round one encounter.
