THE PLAYERS

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN

  • Defending World Grand Prix champion Michael van Gerwen was forced to dig deep in round one as he came back from a set behind to see off the brave challenge of Jamie Hughes.
  • Van Gerwen was a way off his best against Hughes but showed his class at the right time with three ton plus checkouts when he was under the cosh – including a 108 finish to win set two and a 135 finish to break throw in the deciding set.
  • MVG has never lost in round two at the World Grand Prix and, such is his proficiency, he has reached the final in five of the last seven years in Dublin.

JEFFREY DE ZWAAN

  • Jeffrey de Zwaan progressed to round two at the World Grand Prix for the second consecutive year with minimal fuss as he brushed aside Steve Beaton 2-0 whilst dropping only one leg.
  • Although De Zwaan has tasted success on the tour this season with a ranking tournament win, he arrived in Dublin without a quarter-final appearance in a senior PDC ranking event since May.
  • The young Dutch star has winning form on TV against his elder compatriot Van Gerwen having defeated the world number one twice on the big stage in 2018 with notable wins at both the UK Open and World Matchplay.

THE PREDICTION

Michael van Gerwen faces an extremely tricky test in round two against fellow Dutchman Jeffrey de Zwaan, who has ousted the world number one in two big TV tournaments previously. De Zwaan is a confident player and will certainly not fear the task in front of him. MVG is still more than capable of beating anyone but he is not at his formidable best and could be susceptible to another early exit in a major ranking tournament.
