MICHAEL VAN GERWEN
- Michael van Gerwen won his first major PDC title at the 2012 World Grand Prix and has gone on to win the title here on three further occasions, including last year when he defeated Peter Wright in the final.
- Despite his success in Dublin, Van Gerwen has never won the title in consecutive years and he famously lost in round one to John Henderson in 2017.
- ‘The Green Machine’ won back-to-back World Series tournaments in the summer but will be looking to improve on his performances at the UK Open and World Matchplay where he exited early on.
JAMIE HUGHES
- Former two-time BDO World Championship semi-finalist Jamie Hughes is making his World Grand Prix debut having only won his PDC tour card at the start of 2019 so this is a milestone for him.
- Hughes has produced a number of impressive performances in 2019 and claimed the biggest cheque of his career when winning the Czech Open on the Euro Tour in June.
- ‘Yozza’ also faced a tough opening round fixture when he made his World Matchplay debut in July – he led 6-3 against Michael Smith only to lose 10-6 in a high-quality encounter against the eventual tournament runner-up.
THE PREDICTION
Michael van Gerwen has not had things his own way in the last two big TV ranking tournaments with early exits at the UK Open and World Matchplay, and a tough draw against the dangerous Jamie Hughes will be a big test for the number one seed. With this being the first appearance in this unique double start format it is hard to tell how quickly Hughes will settle, but he has the quality to push the Dutchman all the way and a hard-fought win for MVG in three sets is the prediction.
