THE PLAYERS

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN

  • Defending champion Michael van Gerwen moved one step closer to retaining his title after coming through a tough game against Mervyn King in the quarter-finals where he eventually won in four hard-fought sets.
  • The fact that MVG had to survive missed set-darts by King in two of the three sets he won shows how hard he was pushed by his opponent but the way in which Van Gerwen took his own chances showed how determined he is right now.
  • This is Van Gerwen’s sixth time in the semi-finals at the World Grand Prix and he has never lost at this stage of the tournament previously – last year he defeated the 2017 Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney in the semis on his way to winning the title.

CHRIS DOBEY

  • Chris Dobey defeated Ian White 3-2 on Thursday evening to make it through to his first ever PDC major semi-final on what is his World Grand Prix debut.
  • Dobey’s combination finishing against White was top class. Overall, he hit five ton-plus checkouts in the match including a remarkable total of four in the last five legs to stun his beleaguered opponent.
  • Although he has yet to defeat Michael van Gerwen having lost all four of their previous meetings, he has come close with two of their last three encounters going all the way to a last-leg decider.

THE PREDICTION

Chris Dobey has performed remarkably well to reach the semi-finals with outstanding composure at key moments and he will need to replicate that and more if he is to overcome a very determined MVG. The defending champion looks well motivated to retain his title and one feels that even when pushed hard he will rise to the test posed by Dobey and earn his place in the World Grand Prix final for the sixth time.
