THE PLAYERS

IAN WHITE

  • Ian White reached the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix for the second time in his career following a 3-1 win over Michael Smith on Tuesday evening. Having lost the opening set, he rallied to win the next two sets without dropping a leg and then won the fourth set on throw to take his place in the last eight.
  • His form on the starting doubles in the fourth set against Smith was very impressive and played a big part in denying his opponent a way back into the match. Diamond kicked-off with a ton plus score in three of the last four legs of the match.
  • White will be aiming to end his run of having never progressed further than the quarter-finals in a PDC TV tournament. He has made it through to the last eight on seven previous occasions but never managed to get over the line.

CHRIS DOBEY

  • Chris Dobey reached the quarter-finals courtesy of an excellent come-from-behind victory over world number three Gary Anderson in what is his debut appearance at the World Grand Prix.
  • Anderson took the opening set and was leading by two legs to one before Dobey turned on the style to win eight of the next nine legs courtesy of some very cool finishing against the former two-time World Champion.
  • This is Dobey’s third major TV quarter-final appearance and he was well beaten in each of the previous two with a 10-2 defeat against Gurney at the 2018 Players Championship finals and a 16-5 trouncing against Wade at the 2016 Grand Slam.

THE PREDICTION

Something has to give here with neither player having made it through to the semi-finals in a major PDC tournament. Although White has performed well to get this far and has much more experience, there remain some question marks over his big-stage pedigree as he has so often fallen at the quarter-final hurdle at these events. Although Dobey has also failed to get further than this stage in a big tournament he has less pressure on his shoulders and will be full of confidence after eliminating Gary Anderson - so he gets the nod here.
