THE PLAYERS

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN

  • Defending champion Michael van Gerwen made short work of Chris Dobey in the semi-finals with a win in straight sets, taking him into the World Grand Prix final for the sixth time.
  • Although Van Gerwen has won the title here in Dublin on four occasions, he has yet to successfully defend the title and is playing with a real determination to end that run here. He has dropped only two sets on his way to reaching the final, a feat he also managed last year.
  • Van Gerwen lost to Chisnall at the Grand Prix in 2013 but has gained revenge since on many occasions, including victories on this stage in 2016 and 2018 - both were years in which he claimed the title in Dublin. Overall, MVG has won 25 and drawn one of his last 26 matches against Chizzy.

DAVE CHISNALL

  • Dave Chisnall defeated BDO World Champion Glen Durrant 4-1 on Friday evening to reach the Grand Prix final for the second time. With the match poised at one set all, Chisnall went on to win three sets in a row - all in the deciding leg - to overcome his opponent.
  • The last time he reached the final in Dublin was in 2013 when he also recorded his one and only win against Van Gerwen in a major TV tournament in the quarter-finals. In the final itself, he was well beaten 6-0 by Phil Taylor having lost each of the opening five sets without winning a leg.
  • Chizzy is aiming to win his first TV title in what is his eighth TV final appearance. He has lost to Michael van Gerwen in four of his previous TV final appearances with the other defeats coming against darting greats Martin Adams and Phil Taylor (x2).

THE PREDICTION

Michael van Gerwen is closing in on successfully defending the World Grand Prix title for the first time. He was been playing with a real purpose this week and looks determined to prove he is still the main man. A tough test awaits against Chisnall who has the form and confidence right now to push him to the limit but such is the Dutchman’s dominance over Chizzy in their head-to-head record, it is hard not to side with an MVG victory
