THE PLAYERS

DARYL GURNEY

  • Daryl Gurney has very fond memories of Dublin having won his first major title at this tournament in 2017 when he defeated Simon Whitlock in a thrilling final.
  • Gurney has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of the last three years at the World Grand Prix and had a good attempt at defending his title last year but was eventually beaten by Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals.
  • The Northern Irishman suffered a huge disappointment in his last match in a PDC major ranking tournament in July when he surrendered leads of 14-7 and 15-10 in losing 17-15 to Rob Cross in a dramatic World Matchplay semi-final.

DANNY NOPPERT

  • Danny Noppert made his World Grand Prix debut last year and was defeated 2-0 by Welshman Gerwyn Price in round one with a disappointing average of 76.55.
  • Former BDO World Championship runner-up Noppert reached the semi-finals at the Players Championship Finals last November but has exited early in the TV tournaments since then.
  • It was Gurney who ended Noppert’s run at the aforementioned Players Championship Finals and the Dutchman has struggled to get the better of the Northern Irishman in their previous encounters.

THE PREDICTION

Daryl Gurney feels at home on the Dublin stage and will be keen to have another good run in the tournament. The Northern Irishman is comfortable with the unique double start format has a good record against Noppert who has not shown his true ability enough on the big stage in the PDC, and the 2017 Grand Prix champion should progress to the next round.
