THE PLAYERS
DANNY NOPPERT
- Former BDO World Championship finalist Danny Noppert ousted 2017 World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney on Monday evening to reach round two having previous lost in round one in 2018.
- Noppert punished Gurney for missing five darts to win the opening set by winning each of the last five legs of the match to claim a win in straight sets against an opponent who hit only two of his 13 attempts at a finishing double.
- Noppie came out on top against Aspinall in their previous TV tournament encounter, with a 5-2 win in the group stage at the 2017 Grand Slam of Darts.
NATHAN ASPINALL
- Nathan Aspinall impressed on his Grand Prix debut by brushing aside former quarter-finalist Vincent van der Voort and dropped only one leg in doing so.
- UK Open champion Aspinall was in ruthless form as he ended the match with a very impressive checkout percentage of 75% which was the best of any player in round one.
- The Asp continues to look very much at ease on the big stage and having won the UK Open and reached the semi-finals at the World Championship, he has to be considered as one of the main contenders for the title in Dublin.
THE PREDICTION
Nathan Aspinall again showed his ability on the big stage as he coasted to victory in round one with a confident display in his first ever match at the Grand Prix. He now faces Danny Noppert who was thankful for former Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney’s wayward finishing in their encounter. It is unlikely that Aspinall will be as charitable and he has the belief and talent to get past the challenge of the Dutchman.
