THE PLAYERS

STEVE LENNON

  • Steve Lennon is appearing at the PDC World Championship for the third time having previously lost 3-2 in the first round against Michael Smith on his debut two years ago.
  • Last year he defeated Australian qualifier James Bailey 3-0 in the opening round before losing 3-2 to Alan Norris in round two in an epic match that went into extra-legs, with Lennon missing darts to win the match.
  • The highlight of his season has been reaching the final at the World Cup of Darts whilst representing the Republic of Ireland alongside William O’Connor. That tournament was a rare positive though as on the regular tour his results have not been good and he hasn’t even reached the last 16 in a ranking tournament since March.

CALLAN RYDZ

  • Callan Rydz is making his World Championship debut at this tournament, and the 21-year old qualified by impressively finishing at the top of the PDC Challenge Tour Order of Merit – an achievement which also earned him a tour card.
  • His consistent displays on the PDC’s second-tier tour saw him win two Challenge Tour titles during 2019 and he also claimed a title on the PDC Development Tour his year.
  • Rydz also reached a quarter-final on the main tour in 2019 and has wins against the likes of Glen Durrant and Raymond van Barneveld on his record in the latter part of this season.

THE PREDICTION

Steve Lennon has had a poor season on the tour and he comes into this tournament looking to try and rediscover the form that saw him selected as one of the ‘contenders’ in the 2019 Premier League. The draw has not been kind to the Irishman as he faces a very dangerous opponent in Callan Rydz who will surely be full of belief having won plenty of matches in 2019 on the Challenge Tour and Development Tour. This is a big occasion for Rydz as he is making his World Championship debut but it might be a debut to remember, as Lennon’s finishing can be very erratic and Rydz is predicted to take advantage and win through to round two.
