THE PLAYERS
RYAN JOYCE
- Ryan Joyce reached the quarter-finals on his first appearance in the PDC World Championship last year when he defeated Anastasia Dobromyslova, Simon Whitlock, Alan Norris and James Wade before losing to the eventual champion Michael van Gerwen.
- On his run to the quarter-finals at Alexandra Palace in the 2018-19 World Championship, he recorded an average of under 88.50 in three of his matches and his highest match average during the tournament was 90.40.
- Joyce’s best performance in a PDC ranking tournament this season came in October when he reached the semi-finals at a Players Championship event, and he only managed two further quarter-final appearances on tour in 2019.
JAN DEKKER
- Jan Dekker has yet to have a significant run at the PDC World Championship. In three previous appearances at Alexandra Palace he has won a total of two matches, with one of those being last year when he defeated Lisa Ashton in round one.
- Prior to switching to the PDC, he had made two semi-final appearances at the BDO World Championship, the first of which was on his debut back in 2011.
- Dekker reached a couple of quarter-finals earlier in the year, but in recent months he has really struggled for form and has suffered a number of first round exits in ranking tournaments.
THE PREDICTION
Ryan Joyce comes to Alexandra Palace with good memories having reached the quarter-finals on his debut last year when he earned notable wins against the likes of Simon Whitlock and James Wade in doing so. Although he hasn’t really pushed on since then, his form coming into the tournament is better than Jan Dekker’s, as the Dutchman has lost in the opening round far too many times in recent months. It still promises to be a close game with them both likely to be playing at a similar standard throughout, but Joyce is predicted to come through in five sets.
