THE PLAYERS

RICKY EVANS

  • Ricky Evans is competing at the PDC World Championship for the fifth time and he has yet to get further than the last 32 in his four previous visits to Alexandra Palace.
  • Evans has lost in his opening match in each of the last two years at Ally Pally, with a narrow 3-2 against Michael Smith two years ago followed by a 3-1 round one defeat against Rowby-John Rodriguez last time out.
  • He moved into the top 32 in the PDC Order of Merit in 2019 having reached two ranking tournament finals and also appeared in his first TV tournament quarter-final at the European Championship in late October.

MARK MCGEENEY

  • 2018 BDO World Championship runner-up Mark McGeeney made a winning start to his debut PDC World Championship campaign when he defeated Canada’s Matt Campbell 3-1 in round one.
  • McGeeney produced a good all-round performance against the Canadian qualifier, finishing the match with an average of 93.66 and a very good checkout percentage of just under 59%.
  • Since winning his tour card last January, his best performance on the PDC circuit has been a run to the semi-finals at a floor tournament in March. Apart from that, he has not made it further than the last 16 in any ranking tournament.

THE PREDICTION

Ricky Evans has made good progress over the last two years and is now a seeded a player at the PDC World Championship for the first time. ‘Rapid Ricky’ has improved the consistency of his play and a run to the quarter-finals at the European Championship will have boosted his confidence. Mark McGeeney is certainly a danger to the seeded player and although he is a newcomer to the PDC, his performances in the BDO deserve respect. This round two clash has the real potential to go the distance, with McGeeney just edging it.
