THE PLAYERS

PETER WRIGHT

  • Peter Wright recorded his highest ever average in a World Championship match of 105.86 in his 5-3 victory against Luke Humphries to reach the semi-finals at Alexandra Palace for the third time in his career.
  • Wright’s impressive finishing during this tournament was again in evidence against Humphries as he landed checkouts of 170 and 161. Snakebite now has 13 ton-plus checkouts to his name at the 2019-20 PDC World Championship which is the most of any player.
  • He also tops the 180 hitting chart in the tournament with a total of 41 over his previous four matches, and his total of 12 against Humphries was the second game in a row that he achieved that tally.

GERWYN PRICE

  • Gerwyn Price emphatically defeated three-time BDO world champion Glen Durrant 5-1 to make it through to the semi-finals at the PDC World Championship for the first time.
  • Price averaged just under 100 and had a checkout percentage of 47% in a very accomplished performance that saw him dominate Durrant.
  • The Welshman has lost 13 of his 19 meetings against Wright but that does not tell the story of their recent encounters with Price winning four of the last five – the most recent of which was his 16-6 victory in the final at the Grand Slam of Darts when Price averaged almost 108 in a supreme display.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these players had scares earlier in the tournament when they could have exited in their opening games but the longer format matches have seen them show more of their capabilities and there is plenty of reason to believe this could be a high-quality, close encounter between two top class performers. They are both able to hit similarly high levels of play on the big stage and that makes this a very tough game to call. Price should have some extra belief having won four of their last five contests, which includes a dominant win against Wright in the Grand Slam of Darts final in November and this might give him the edge. A 6-4 win to Price is the prediction but over 21.5 180s is the main tip for the match.
