THE PLAYERS

NATHAN ASPINALL

  • 2019 UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall opened his campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 victory against America’s Danny Baggish.
  • Last year’s surprise semi-finalist Aspinall lost the opening set against Baggish and had to dig deep to see off a tricky opponent, his belief gained from the run to the last four here last year standing him in good stead.
  • Aspinall finished his round two match with an average of 95.38 and a 38.46% success on the doubles – below what his expected standard is and he will have to produce better if he is to match his run in the 2018-19 World Championship.

KRZYSZTOF RATAJSKI

  • Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski averaged 91.35 as he defeated Zoran Lerchbacher in four tough sets in their 2nd round encounter.
  • That was Ratajski’s first ever win at Alexandra Palace – after suffering opening match defeats in the last two years. His superior checkout percentage of 40.74% compared to Lerchbacher’s 28.57% was the key factor.
  • The Polish Eagle has defeated Aspinall twice this year – once in the final of a Players Championship tournament and more recently in the opening round at the World Series of Darts Finals where he won 6-5 in a thriller where both players averaged over 103.

THE PREDICTION

If Aspinall and Ratajski turn up and play at the same standard they produced in their meeting at the World Series of Darts Finals then we would be in for a real treat, as on that occasion they went toe-to-toe in an excellent encounter that saw Aspinall average 103 and Ratajski hit the 104 mark. Both players have the potential to go deep in this tournament, but the edge might just be with Aspinall due to having produced a higher consistency of performances on the big stage over the last year. The Asp had an excellent run here last year and he can keep alive his chances of a repeat by overcoming Ratajski in this clash.
