THE PLAYERS

MARK MCGEENEY

  • Mark McGeeney only made the move across from the BDO at the start of 2019 so is making his PDC World Championship debut. He is no stranger to the big occasion having reached the final of the BDO World Championship in 2018 where he lost 7-6 to Glen Durrant after missing darts to win the title.
  • McGeeney has further pedigree of progressing to major finals during his time in the BDO as he reached back-to-back finals at the World Masters in 2016 and 2017 where he lost to Glen Durrant and Krzysztof Ratajski respectively.
  • Since winning his tour card last January, his best performance on the PDC circuit has been a run to the semi-finals at a floor tournament in March. Apart from that, he has not made it further than the last 16 in any ranking tournament.

MATT CAMPBELL

  • Matt Campbell is making his first appearance at a World Championship having earned his spot due to being the highest ranked Canadian on the CDC Order of Merit where he finished second behind regular World Championship qualifier Darin Young from America.
  • In what has been a successful season, Campbell has shown glimpses of his potential by posting a couple of averages in excess of 100 on the 2019 CDC circuit.
  • The Canadian qualifier comes to Alexandra Palace with no big expectations on his shoulders and is very much an unknown quantity in what is his big stage TV debut.

THE PREDICTION

Former BDO World Championship finalist Mark McGeeney has not made a big impact since switching to the PDC at the start of 2019, but he has achieved one of his goals by qualifying for this tournament which is an opportunity to give his ranking a boost. The draw could have been worse for McGeeney but there is also the problem that he won’t really know what to expect from Campbell. The Canadian is making his big stage debut and it is unknown how he will settle in. The extra experience McGeeney possesses should stand him in good stead though and he is tipped to win this match whilst also hitting the most 180s.
