THE PLAYERS

LUKE HUMPHRIES

  • Luke Humphries enjoyed a tremendous run to the quarter-finals at the 2018-19 PDC World Championship where he claimed the scalp of the defending champion Rob Cross in the last 16, having defeated the likes of Stephen Bunting and Dimitri Van den Bergh in earlier rounds.
  • Since reaching the quarter-finals here at the end of last year, he has only managed to make one quarter-final appearance in a senior PDC tournament, which was at a Players Championship tournament in June.
  • Despite his lack of success on the main tour this year, he does come into this tournament with plenty of confidence having recently won the 2019 PDC World Youth Championship at the end of November and he also won three titles on the PDC Development tour in 2019.

DEVON PETERSEN

  • Devon Petersen is no stranger to the World Championship stage having competed at the PDC World Championship on six previous occasions and he has reached the last 16 twice – including most recently at the 2018-19 tournament.
  • In that run to the last 16 here last year, he defeated Wayne Jones, Ian White and Steve West before eventually losing 4-3 to Nathan Aspinall in a thrilling encounter that went into extra legs. Petersen had earlier missed three darts to lead three sets to nil.
  • Results on tour for Petersen in 2019 have not been eye-catching with only one quarter-final appearance to his name in a ranking event this season.

THE PREDICTION

This is a tough match to call between two players who played well here last year but did not manage to transfer that level of performance onto the main tour in 2019. In terms of confidence and form though, it is likely that recently-crowned PDC World Youth champion Luke Humphries has the edge as he will be buoyant after winning that title. Petersen does raise his game when playing on the big stage and it promises to be a close encounter, possibly settled in a last-set decider with Humphries just coming out on top.
