THE PLAYERS

JONNY CLAYTON

  • Jonny Clayton is appearing at his fourth consecutive PDC World Championship and will be looking to improve on a poor record that has only seen him win only one match at Alexandra Palace – that solitary victory was on his tournament debut against Gerwyn Price.
  • In each the last two years he exited the tournament in his first match, losing to surprise semi-finalist Jamie Lewis two years ago and last year to Dimitri Van den Bergh who recorded an average of 104 in their encounter.
  • Clayton won a ranking tournament in April and has reached a handful of semi-finals on the tour this season, but his performances on the big stage have been very inconsistent, he averaged 111 in a 6-0 win against James Wade at the European Championship and averaged under 85 in a 6-0 defeat against Ryan Meikle at the recent Players Championship Finals.

JAN DEKKER

  • Jan Dekker survived four missed match-darts against Ryan Joyce in a match that went all the way to the fifth leg in the deciding set. It was a very scrappy match with both players averaging in the mid-80’s.
  • Dutchman Dekker had looked in a strong position to win more comfortably having taken a lead of two sets to nil, but Joyce dug deep and Dekker was a relieved man at the end of the encounter.
  • A win for Dekker in this match would put him into the last 32 in a televised tournament for the first time since the 2017-18 PDC World Championship.

THE PREDICTION

Jonny Clayton has exited this tournament early-on in all three of his previous appearances at Alexandra Palace, although to be fair the performances of Jamie Lewis and Dimitri Van den Bergh against him in the last two years were of a very high standard but Clayton was still below-par. This match against Dekker should represent a good chance for the Welshman to register a rare win at Alexandra Palace, Dekker has not had a good season and it seems unlikely that he will have the consistency to put enough pressure on the seeded player. A Clayton win in four sets is the prediction.
