THE PLAYERS

IAN WHITE

  • Ian White has been a regular participant at the PDC World Championship for a number of years but has only made it through to the quarter-finals on one occasion in his eight previous appearances at Alexandra Palace.
  • White has had an excellent season on the PDC circuit with a number of final appearances and two tournament wins on the Euro Tour which were claimed in last-leg deciders against Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright.
  • He comes into this World Championship having recently achieved a landmark first semi-final appearance in a TV tournament at the Players Championship Finals. That ended a run of eight winless quarter-finals in big stage events for White.

DARIUS LABANAUSKAS

  • Darius Labanauskas cruised to a very comfortable 3-0 win in round one against Matthew Edgar on Saturday in what was a repeat match-up from the opening round last year when Labanauskas was again triumphant.
  • Labanauskas produced a consistently good all-round performance against Edgar, and was especially clinical at closing out legs as shown by his checkout percentage of 52.94%.
  • At this stage of the World Championship last year, he produced one of the shocks of the tournament when he defeated five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld 3-2.

THE PREDICTION

White looks primed for a good run in this tournament on the back of a successful season on tour, and his long-awaited first appearance in a TV semi-final at the Players Championship Finals should further bolster his belief. Labanauskas is a tricky opponent and will make White work hard for the win but Diamond should be too good and is predicted to win in four sets.
