THE PLAYERS

GERWYN PRICE

  • Gerwyn Price comes into this tournament in the best form of his career with multiple tournament wins under his belt in 2019, including most notably the Grand Slam of Darts title, which he successfully retained with consecutive victories in the latter rounds against Gary Anderson, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright.
  • As well as winning the Grand Slam of Darts crown, he also reached the final at the European Championship and Players Championship Finals, meaning he arrives at Ally Pally with appearances in the final in each of the last three PDC televised ranking tournaments.
  • Price will be looking to improve on a very underwhelming record at the PDC World Championship, with only one last 16 appearance on his record in his five previous appearance at Alexandra Palace. Last year, he exited the tournament against eventual semi-finalist Nathan Aspinall.

WILLIAM O’CONNOR

  • William O’Connor enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win against Finland’s Marko Kantele in his opening match of the tournament on Monday evening, dropping just four legs in doing so.
  • O’Connor’s overall performance against Kantele was below the standards he would have hoped for, having finished the match with an average of 88.23 and a checkout percentage of 30%.
  • This is only O’Connor’s third appearance at the PDC World Championship, with his run to the last 32 last time out being his best showing. At this stage of the tournament last year he averaged 98.73 in a 3-2 win against James Wilson.

THE PREDICTION

Gerwyn Price enters the tournament brimming with belief on the back of some exceptional results and performances in 2019. The Welshman has never managed to reach the quarter-finals here previously, but he has never been in better form. Price will certainly be tested in this match against the very capable William O’Connor who reached the quarters at the recent Players Championship Finals, but the number three seed should come through the test with flying colours and is tipped to win in four sets.
