DARYL GURNEY
- A quarter-final appearance at the 2016-17 PDC World Championship, where he lost to Michael van Gerwen, represents Daryl Gurney’s best ever performance at Alexandra Palace.
- Since that run to the quarters three years ago, he has exited the tournament in the early rounds, losing to John Henderson in the last 32 two years ago and to Jamie Lewis at this stage of the tournament last December.
- Gurney comes into this tournament having lost in round one to Luke Woodhouse at the recent Players Championship Finals where he was defending his title. Despite that setback, he has had some good showings in big TV tournament this year, reaching the semi-finals of the Premier League, World Matchplay and European Championship.
JUSTIN PIPE
- Justin Pipe survived three match darts in a tight first round tussle against Slovenian debutant Benjamin Pratnemer, where he was forced to come back from 2-1 down to claim the victory.
- Prior to his victory against Pratnemer, Pipe had only won one of his last six matches at the PDC World Championship.
- Pipe’s average of 92.26 against Pratnemer was his highest at Alexandra Palace since he averaged 93 against Devon Petersen at the 2013-14 World Championship.
THE PREDICTION
Daryl Gurney is an accomplished performer on the big stage with two major titles under his belt and is a genuine contender in any tournament he enters. The Northern Irishman will not take this game lightly as he has suffered disappointing early exits in each of the last two years at Ally Pally and will be very wary of the threat posed by his opponent in this match. Pipe is not anywhere near as consistent as he was but he still has the potential to beat the seeded player if he is under par. Gurney’s scoring power should give him the advantage but don’t rule out this going the distance.
