THE PLAYERS

DARREN WEBSTER

  • Darren Webster is competing at the PDC World Championship for the tenth time, he has reached the quarter-finals on two occasions, with his most recent run to the quarters being at the 2017-18 tournament where he lost 5-0 to Jamie Lewis in the last eight.
  • Webster had a very disappointing showing at Ally Pally last year, he bowed out in straight sets against Vincent van der Voort in his opening match of the tournament with an average of 85.48.
  • Barring a couple of quarter-final appearances, it has been a poor season on the tour for Webster who has lost his place in the top 16 in the PDC Order of Merit. He did, however, show some promising signs at the Grand Slam in November when he qualified from the group stage.

YUKI YAMADA

  • Japan's Yuki Yamada enjoyed a debut win over Ryan Meikle in round one, Yamada won by three sets to one against a player who was also appearing at the PDC World Championship for the first time.
  • Yamada responded well after losing the opening set to Meikle by winning each of the next three, it wasn’t a high-standard affair though, with Yamada averaging just under 86 and Meikle had a lowly average of 81.
  • This is without doubt the biggest match of his career, with his only previous appearance in a PDC televised singles tournament being at the Japan Darts Masters in 2015.

THE PREDICTION

Darren Webster has been playing below the level that saw him reach the quarter-finals here two years ago and he is very much in need of good end to what has been a poor year. With that in mind, the second-round draw could have been a lot worse for Webster with Yamada making his debut and he is surely there for the taking if Webster manages to maintain his composure. Yamada might take a set but he is unlikely to oust the seeded player from the tournament.
