THE PLAYERS
DARIUS LABANAUSKAS
- Darius Labanauskas made his PDC World Championship debut last year when he defeated Matthew Edgar in round one and then earned a famous win against Dutch legend Raymond van Barneveld before losing to Adrian Lewis in the third round.
- Prior to his debut in the PDC World Championship, Labanauskas had competed four times in the BDO version and his best showing in that code was in 2017 when he was defeated by the eventual champion Glen Durrant in the quarter-finals.
- Having won his full PDC tour card at European Q School at the start of 2019, he went on to reach a ranking tournament final in May – although he hasn’t managed to reach a quarter-final since then.
MATTHEW EDGAR
- Matthew Edgar will be hoping for a reversal of fortunes having lost 3-1 to Darius Labanauskas in the opening round on his World Championship debut last year.
- Edgar earned his return to Ally Pally by coming through the PDPA Tour Card Holder Qualifier in late November where he won four matches – though he didn’t average over 88.5 in any of those games.
- Although Edgar has been playing on the PDC tour for a number of years, his appearances in major ranking tournaments have been scarce with two runs to the last 32 at the UK Open being his best performances.
THE PREDICTION
This is a repeat of their first-round encounter at the last World Championship where Labanauskas recovered from losing the opening set by winning nine of the next ten legs to earn progression to the next round, from where he claimed the famous scalp of Raymond van Barneveld. Labanauskas still looks the stronger of the two players and it is likely that there will indeed be a repeat of last year’s outcome with the Lithuanian progressing.
