THE PLAYERS

ANDY BOULTON

  • Andy Boulton is returning to Alexandra Palace for the first time in three years. He made his debut at the PDC World Championship in the 2016-17 tournament where he defeated Per Laursen in a preliminary round before losing 3-0 to Gary Anderson in the first round.
  • Prior to his PDC World Championship debut, he had competed at the BDO World Championship on three occasions though only managed to win one match at the Lakeside in that spell with his sole win coming against Martin Atkins in his first match.
  • Boulton won his tour card back at Q School earlier this year and has made three quarter-final appearances on tour in 2019. Although results haven’t on the whole been great, he has thrown in some eye-catching performances. Within the last three months he has posted an average of 108 and a couple of around the 106 mark in matches on the tour.

DANNY BAGGISH

  • American qualifier Danny Baggish earned his debut World Championship appearance by winning the North American Championship on American Independence Day in Las Vegas.
  • Baggish came through by winning in last-leg deciders in the semi-final against Leonard Gates and then against former BDO World Championship finalist Jeff Smith in the final.
  • In the same week as winning that event, he had a taste of big stage experience against a top PDC player when facing Daryl Gurney in the first round of the US Darts Masters and despite losing 6-1, he posted a respectable average of 92.59.

THE PREDICTION

Just qualifying for the PDC World Championship is a huge achievement for Danny Baggish and he will surely be aiming to make the most of the experience though it is unknown how he will cope with the occasion. Andy Boulton is battle-hardened due to playing on the PDC circuit. He is unlikely to give Baggish an easy ride on his debut and is tipped to just edge out the American in five sets.
