THE LOWDOWN

PESHAWAR ZALMI

  • Peshawar Zalmi has their stand-in captain Shoaib Malik for getting them over the line in their first game of the 2022 Pakistan Super League, the 39-year-old scoring a crucial 48 not out to guide his side over the line against Quetta Gladiators, completing a run-chase of 191 in 19.4 overs.
  • Regular captain Wahab Riaz did not play against Quetta after having tested positive for Covid-19 and it remains to be seen whether Wahab will have completed his isolating period in time to feature in this match.

ISLAMABAD UNITED

  • After such an impressive showing across last year’s PSL group stage which saw them top the table with eight wins from ten matches, three more than their nearest competitors, Islamabad United will have been hugely disappointed to wind up finishing in third-place after losing both the Qualifier and second Eliminator match, the latter to Peshawar Zalmi.
  • Opener Alex Hales leads the batting ammunition alongside Ireland star Paul Stirling, whilst Hasan Ali’s fighting spirit and vast experience will no doubt prove crucial, as will the captaincy of Shadab Khan.

THE PREDICTION

Momentum can play a huge part in T20 cricket and that victory for Peshawar Zalmi was a massive one for that reason and they’ll be hoping to catch Islamabad United cold, having already gained a feel for conditions in the National Stadium, whilst their opponents are competing in their very first match of the tournament. For that reason, it would be no surprise if Islamabad were not quite at their best here, particularly in the field with their sharpness yet to be properly tested. A Peshawar Zalmi outfit full of confidence may be set to take advantage, so consider backing them to make it to wins from two in this year’s Pakistan Super League.
