THE LOWDOWN

LAHORE QALANDARS

  • Lahore Qalandars missed their first chance to qualify for the final of PSL 7 after losing to Multan Sultans by 28 runs but have a second opportunity here in the second eliminator against Islamabad United.
  • Once again opener Fakhar Zaman starred for Lahore with the bat, scoring 63 which took his overall tally of runs in the tournament to 584, the most recorded by any player in a single PSL season and he will no doubt be looking to play a big role once again here.

ISLAMABAD UNITED

  • Islamabad United took one step closer to the final by beating Peshawar Zalmi by five wickets in an absorbing first eliminator match that saw them reach their target of 170 with three balls remaining.
  • After returning to the camp in a bid to help his injury-hit side through, opener Alex Hales laid the foundations of the run chase with a crucial 62, whilst captain Shadab Khan also played despite not being fully fit and the all-rounder should lead his team again in this one.

THE PREDICTION

Although Lahore Qalandars will enter this contest as favourites to win, so often the momentum garnered from winning can carry a side through and playing only the day before is likely to benefit Islamabad United, rather than working against them. The victory over Peshawar was an indication of Islamabad’s strength within their middle-order batting and with the return of Hales boosting them at the top of the order, they find themselves in a very promising position. Lahore Qalandars may have the best performing batter in the competition at their disposal in opener Fakhar, but as Multan Sultan showed, the Qalandars could be exposed further down their order and their bowling attack isn’t as formidable as it was over the league stage without Rashid Khan. When taking all of this into account, seriously consider backing Islamabad United to continue on their upward trajectory and triumph in this second eliminator.
