THE LOWDOWN

DAMBULLA VIIKING

  • Dambulla’s impressive form continued in their most recent outing against Galle as they won their fourth match out of five in the tournament last time out and they will look to follow that up against the Stallions.
  • They continue to move their batting order around as it was skipper Shanaka’s turn to bat at number three against the Gladiators but that was following a century stand between the openers so it may well be that Angelo Perera returns to three if they lose an early wicket.
  • That change against Galle was justified as Dambulla plundered their first 200+ score of the tournament with Upul Tharanga, Niroshan Dickwella and Shanaka scoring a combined 174 of the team’s 207 runs and they will look to produce a similar display here.

JAFFNA STALLIONS

  • Jaffna’s impressive tournament was blighted by a defeat to Colombo in their last match as the Stallions failed to reach 150 despite batting out their full 20 overs for the first time in this tournament so far.
  • The potential over-reliance on Avishka Fernando and Thisara Perera has been evident and was made more obvious in that game against Colombo with both Fernando and Perera failing to rescue them this time and they do ultimately need others to step up with the bat.
  • The impressive Wanindu Hasaranga has been the key man for Jaffna. As well as being the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, he also contributed with the bat in that defeat to Colombo scoring 41 off 23 balls as he continues his fine form.

THE PREDICTION

In the first match between these two sides it was Jaffna who were the overwhelming victors as they waltzed to a 66-run victory. The Stallions scored 218-7 and then bowled Dambulla out for 152 in one of the most impressive performances of the tournament by any side. With both teams sitting on eight points and a place in the knockout round being a formality Jaffna’s batting may just be suffering a dip in form at the wrong time which may hand an advantage to Dambulla in what should be a much closer game this time around.
