THE LOWDOWN

COLOMBO KINGS

  • Colombo came into the tournament as one of the two main favourites and have justified those who suggested it with key all-rounders Andre Russell and Angelo Mathews leading the side by example in an impressive manner.
  • Qais Ahmad’s improvement as the tournament has gone on as well as the superb performances of Dinesh Chandimal at the top of the order and the seam bowling potency of Dushmantha Chameera, albeit expensive, has been key to their early qualification for the semi-finals.
  • Colombo may consider one or two changes and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they decide to rest one of their veterans given the busy schedule in the second half of this tournament.

GALLE GLADIATORS

  • Galle’s hapless and hopeless tournament continued with a fifth consecutive defeat on Saturday and despite that continuation of bad form, it was a valiant run-chase as the Gladiators fell nine runs short of Dambulla’s 208 run target.
  • Ahead of this match, Galle will once again be without their captain Shahid Afridi who hasn’t played since a golden duck against Kandy in Galle’s third game after returning to Pakistan due to an emergency and his absence continues to leave them weakened.
  • Danushka Gunathilaka and Azam Khan have remained positives for Galle but they overwhelming view is that they simply lack the quality to compete for a full game against their rivals in the LPL.

THE PREDICTION

This match seems to be a formality as it pits a Colombo side with genuine and realistic hopes of winning the inaugural LPL title against a Galle side who are stuck to the bottom of the table and are destined to remain there. Russell and the rest of the Kings should have way too much form and quality for the Gladiators and barring any complacency creeping in, expect the Kings to win this comfortably.
