LAST MEETING

THE LOWDOWN

IRELAND

  • Ireland suffered heartbreak in one of the most thrilling ODIs in their history on Sunday, which saw them concede 20 off the final over of the match to ultimately lose with a ball to spare, needing just one wicket to triumph themselves.
  • Harry Tector’s 113 was the highlight of the home side’s innings and they’ll be extremely disappointed to have reached 300/9, but fail to defend it.

NEW ZEALAND

  • Michael Bracewell played one of the best ODI innings you’ll ever see coming in at number seven and scoring an incredible unbeaten 127 from 82 balls including 10 fours and 7 sixes, leading his side to their victory target of 301 with a delivery to go after hitting 4, 4, 6, 4, 6 from the 50th over.
  • Both Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips made their ODI debuts for the Black Caps and the expectation is that they’ll be given another opportunity, although fast bowler Adam Milne’s Achilles injury is likely to keep him out once again.

THE PREDICTION

Michael Bracewell’s heroics that saw New Zealand somehow get over the line against Ireland on Sunday have been dubbed “The Miracle of Malahide” and the tourists return to the scene on Tuesday in a bid to wrap this three-match series up with a game to spare. What the win did illustrate was the strength-in-depth of New Zealand from the perspective of their batting order and that even a victory target of above 300 is attainable for them should they be bowling first. As for Ireland, cricket can prove a psychological game at times and having lost in the manner that they did last time out, it would be no surprise if it has flattened the morale of the Irish dressing room. It’s hard to see them being able to bounce back with such a short turnaround, so consider backing New Zealand to come out on top once again.
