Afghanistan would have been very content at the half-way stage of the first ODI after bowling Pakistan out for 201, although after reducing them to 62/4 they may have hoped for better. However, that was as good as it got for them, their batters wilting miserably against a world class Pakistan fast bowling attack. Bowled out for a paltry 59 with a top score of just 18 from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Afghanistan were beaten by a whopping 142 runs.

Pakistan won’t have been happy with the performance of their batters in the opening game, only five players reached double figures whilst captain Babar Azam was dismissed for a three-ball duck. However, opener Imam ul-Haq continued to demonstrate his ODI pedigree with an important 61 which helped lead Pakistan to a defendable total. From then on, the bowlers took control in some style, bowling away Afghanistan with their unrelenting pace, seam and swing which saw three of their opponents’ top four dismissed for 0.
THE PREDICTION
The first ODI demonstrated clearly that Pakistan’s pace bowling attack is simply far too strong for the Afghanistan batters to handle. They are a world class pack and whilst Afghanistan are an improving nation in the 50-over format, a full-strength Pakistan represent a significant jump in quality that they don’t look like being able to match. With that in mind, expect Pakistan to once again emerge victorious in this game.
