THE PREDICTION

On Sunday, expect the cricketing world to stand still as for the first time since the T20 World Cup back in 2021, India and Pakistan will lock horns. As was the case back then, this match will take place at the Dubai International Stadium and Pakistan will be looking to make two wins from two against their biggest rivals here, only this time in the Asia Cup. India though, come into this one having not lost in their last 12 Asia Cup fixtures, a record spanning eight years. Both nations are without their premier fast bowler though injury, with India missing Jasprit Bumrah and Pakistan unable to call upon Shaheen Shah Afridi. Despite that, both teams boast formidable bowling units although it is the batters who are expected to dominate this contest.

One potential worry from a Pakistan perspective is that because the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have all performed so well at the top of the order, their middle order has not really been tested in a situation where a game is in the balance and they need to contribute significantly, so this could count against them should Pakistan lose early wickets here. For India, their biggest worry has to be the form of long-time superstar Virat Kohli. With so many young batters knocking on the selection door, the pressure is on the 33-year-old to rediscover his best and justify his place in the team.

This showdown is so tough to predict as it really could go either way. It cannot be ignored though, that Pakistan’s last T20i match was all the way back in April, whilst India have competed in 15 T20i fixtures since the beginning of June. Such match sharpness in such a short format of cricket may be critical and India’s excellent depth sees them cover all bases with both bat and ball leading into this one even without Bumrah and fellow pacer Harshal Patel. They should be slightly better equipped to deal with those losses than Pakistan will be without the likes of Shaheen and Mohammad Wasim Jr. With that in mind, consider backing India to gain revenge on their great rivals for that T20 World Cup defeat by coming out on top this time round.
