THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

Coach: Matthew Mott

Captain: Jos Buttler

  • England’s battering at the hands of South Africa, their third loss of the group stage leaves them arguably needing to win every game of the five they have remaining to stand a chance of making the semi-finals.
  • They’ll have to plough on without their best-performing bowler, having seen Reece Topley ruled out of the tournament through a fractured finger, so Durham’s Brydon Carse has been called up to replace him, although Sam Curran or Chris Woakes should get the nod against Sri Lanka.

SRI LANKA

Coach: Chris Silverwood

Captain: Dasun Shanaka

  • Like England, Sri Lanka are in a position where anything less than a 100% record from now on is likely to see them knocked out of the competition, although they on the other hand are coming off the back of a win, their first in the group stage after chasing down 263 against Netherlands with five wickets remaining.
  • Fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the rest of this World Cup due to a shoulder injury and Sri Lanka have moved to replace him with the experienced Angelo Matthews, who has been with the squad as travelling reserve.

THE PREDICTION

There is no excuse for England not to enjoy themselves with the bat when taking into account the calibre of batters at their disposal and the expectation that Bengaluru will once again be a very good batting surface on a ground with smaller boundaries. Sri Lanka have struggled to keep opposition batters in check across the tournament so far, conceding scores such as 428 (a record score in 50-over World Cups) and 345. Expect a similar story here and for England to pick up a much-needed win.

BETTING TIP: ENGLAND TO WIN
