THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

Coach: Matthew Mott

Captain: Jos Buttler

  • England’s defence of their World Cup got off to the worst possible start, losing to New Zealand by nine wickets after their sub-par total of 282/9 was chased down comfortably in Ahmedabad.
  • Due to the heaviness of the defeat, England’s poor net-rate-rate sees them stuck at the bottom of the table, further highlighting the importance of this fixture from their point of view, but all-rounder Ben Stokes is likely to remain unavailable through a hip injury.

BANGLADESH

Coach: Chandika Hathurusingha

Captain: Shakib Al Hasan

  • Bangladesh successfully spun-out Afghanistan in Dharamsala this past weekend, bowling out their opponents for just 156, before chasing that total down with four wickets to spare to begin their World Cup campaign with victory.
  • The Tigers have history when it comes to beating England at the ICC Cricket World Cup, doing so back in 2011 and 2015 and whilst they go into this match as underdogs, underestimating them would be a grave error on England’s part.

THE PREDICTION

England will surely not be as poor with the ball as we saw them against New Zealand, especially on a fresh Dharamsala pitch that is expected to offer assistance for the pace bowlers. Reece Topley could come into the side and make a big impact, which the depth of England’s batting remains strong. Bangladesh will be hoping that their spin-bowling proves just as effective as what we saw against Afghanistan, but England represent a step-up in class when it comes to opposition batting. It’s hard to see the world champions falling to consecutive defeats, so back England to pull themselves together and get their first group stage points on the board.

BETTING TIP: ENGLAND TO WIN
