THE LOWDOWN

BANGLADESH

Coach: Chandika Harthurusingha

Captain: Shakib Al Hasan

  • Bangladesh have endured a nightmare World Cup so far and with just two points to their name are now out of contention for the semi-finals, despite having two matches left to play, starting here against Sri Lanka.
  • Their last defeat, a sixth in succession at this tournament saw them have no answer to Pakistan’s bowling attack as they were bowled out for 204, leading to a comfortable run chase.

SRI LANKA

Coach: Chris Silverwood

Captain: Dasun Shanaka

  • Just under two months after being bowled out for 50 against India in the 2023 Asia Cup final, Sri Lanka suffered another humiliating result at the hands of Rohit Sharma’s side, this time in the World Cup as they were bowled out for 55 chasing 357/8, meaning a record defeat of 302 runs.
  • With captain Dasun Shanaka out of the World Cup, Kusal Mendis continues to serve as temporary skipper in what is a Sri Lankan side dogged by injuries and now fighting to secure a place at the ICC Champions Trophy.

THE PREDICTION

This match has important consequences for both teams with only the top eight in the group (plus hosts Pakistan) qualifying for the ICC Champions Trophy. Bangladesh could move level on points with Sri Lanka, but it’s hard to see them accumulating enough runs to do so when taking into account how consistently poor they have been with the bat throughout the group stage so far. Expect Sri Lanka to inflict a seventh straight loss on the Tigers in Delhi.

BETTING TIP: SRI LANKA TO WIN
