THE LOWDOWN

BANGLADESH

Coach: Chandika Hathurusingha

Captain: Shakib Al Hasan

  • Bangladesh come into this 50-over World Cup in relatively good shape for what is arguably their strongest format. They do not quite possess the hitting power for T20 and not quite the stamina or arguably quality to compete with the major teams in the Test arena, but they have a superbly balanced team able to compete with the best in one-dayers.
  • Led by Shakib Al Hasan, The Tigers have a wealth of experience at their disposal at the likes of Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman will be determined to get off to a flying start.

AFGHANISTAN

Coach: Jonathan Trott

Captain: Hashmatullah Shahidi

  • After making their debut in 2015, this is the third consecutive tournament that Afghanistan have reached and they will be looking to build on their record of one win from their 15 matches played in tournament history.
  • There will be a heavy reliance on their spinners with Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad essential to their hopes, but the scrutiny will be on whether their batting can get enough runs to keep them competitive in each match.

THE PREDICTION

A fascinating opening clash lies in store between Bangladesh and Afghanistan with both teams likely viewing this as a winnable game and the perfect way to start their campaign. Bangladesh are often underrated by many but they are a strong outfit for 50-overs matches and will cause issues to many of the big boys. They face an Afghan team determined to show they are continuing to make progress at this level but their batting once again looks suitably fragile. Despite their star bowlers, they will struggle to compete over the longer of the short formats and Bangladesh with their greater depth and all-round quality are favoured to get off to a winning start.

BETTING TIP: Bangladesh to win
