THE LOWDOWN

Hampshire Hawks

  • The Hampshire Hawks finished second in the south group, six points behind the runaway winners Somerset. The Hawks come into this on the back of a final group game in which they cruised to an eight-wicket win against Gloucestershire on Sunday, which means they head into the quarter-finals on the back of three successive victories.
  • The reigning champions have obvious quality throughout, most notably their Australian duo Nathan Ellis and Ben McDermott, but they are pinned together by skipper, James Vince. The England international is the Blast’s top scorer this season with 633 runs in the group stage.

Worcestershire Rapids

  • The Worcestershire Rapids, with a so-called ‘moneyball’ approach, have punched above their financial weight in white ball competitions within the last decade but have drifted in recent years. However, an impressive return to that sort of form has seen the Rapids cruise into the last eight.
  • Despite the loss of Moeen Ali to Birmingham before the season and then mid-season injury to Michael Bracewell, Worcestershire have been exceptional with Pat Brown returning to some impressive form as their leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps. A consistent and strong batting line-up with Brett D’Oliveira, Jack Haynes, Kashif Ali, Adam Hose and Mitchell Santner puts them in a very good position heading to Southampton.

THE PREDICTION

Many believe the winner of Lancashire Lightning and Surrey will be finals’ day favourites and so that is, naturally, a tight one but this encounter appears to be the closest contest to choose. The reigning champions have performed well with the odd blip that will concern them slightly as there is a slight lack of support for Vince and McDermott. The Rapids have enough players performing at a good rate to be confident of posting a half-decent total. With a result almost too close to call, a good bet may well be to back the underdogs, Worcestershire, with a handicap of +10.5 runs/+3.5 wickets.
