THE LOWDOWN

England

It is a well told tale but since 2015 England have reset their white-ball cricket and there is an argument they have the greatest depth in world cricket. Whilst the obvious answer and argument to that would be India, a riposte would be to point towards England winning the T20 World Cup last year without, arguably, five starters in their team. They thumped New Zealand the other night with a seven-wicket win, chasing 140 in less than 15 overs.

New Zealand

Finn Allen has potential but he has had potential for two or three years now without seriously fulfilling it. He began that defeat the other night with 18 off the first over but eventually fell for 21 off 14. Glenn Phillips anchored a very New Zealand total which could have been competitive but Adam Milne, a fine bowler, coming in at eight in their batting order just isn’t really good enough to compete with an England side who carded Sam Curran at eight in their side.

THE PREDICTION

Whilst it would be silly to suggest that because England hammered New Zealand the other night they will do so again; England really should do so again. The depth of English white-ball cricket means that experimental series’ such as this one can see both sides make changes from their best XI but England always, pretty much, come out on top. Emirates Old Trafford has similarities to the Riverside from the other night with a large playing surface and big boundaries so a lower scoring T20 is to be anticipated but setting or chasing, England should win.
