THE LOWDOWN

SYDNEY THUNDER

  • Sydney Thunder looked to have every chance of winning the last edition of the Big Bash League but fell by the wayside when it mattered most and will be desperate to show some greater consistency at the business end of the campaign.
  • Regardless of what may occur later in the tournament, the Thunder will want to get off to a strong start here and will be looking to the likes of recent T20 World Cup winner Alex Hales to lead the way with the bat.

MELBOURNE STARS

  • Melbourne Stars endured a torrid campaign last year as they failed to qualify for the play-off phase of the tournament but they will hope for a more settled line-up this time around having suffered from a raft of issues last time out.
  • The Stars were dealt some huge blows because of COVID-19 related absences but they will hope that is behind them now, although they could well be without skipper Glenn Maxwell for the entire campaign after breaking his leg last month so Adam Zampa will take over as captain.

THE PREDICTION

Sydney Thunder certainly have the talent to go and win this edition of the Big Bash League but they will need to prove their quality when it counts. They fell away last year after looking like they could challenge in the play-offs and will want to put that disappointment behind them at the first time of asking here. Melbourne Stars will prove to be a formidable opponent in this opening clash of the tournament but they are something of an unknown this campaign with lots of young talent potentially breaking into the side so it is worth siding with the Thunder to get the job done in this one.
