THE LOWDOWN

PERTH SCORCHERS

  • Perth Scorchers were made to pay for a lacklustre start to their innings and it ultimately cost them a spot in the BBL|10 final as they succumbed to defeat against Sydney Sixers but they get a second chance here as they take on Brisbane Heat.
  • When Mitch Marsh fell to leave the Scorchers at 85/4 off 12.5 overs, they looked well short of where they needed to be and despite a solid effort from Josh Inglis who finished unbeaten on 69, Perth finished on 167/6.
  • On what was a good batting surface, it wasn’t a big enough total to pressure the Sixers and early wickets were needed to give them the best chance of defending but only one was forthcoming with 92 runs already on the board as the Scorchers were well-beaten by nine wickets.

BRISBANE HEAT

  • Brisbane Heat continued their superb run of form as they won for the fourth game in succession to remain in the hunt for the BBL|10 title and after claiming the scalp of Sydney Thunder last time out, they are now just one win away from the final.
  • Having already seen off Adelaide Strikers in the finals, the Thunder were their next victims as they managed to restrict the dangerous Sydney outfit to 158/8 before backing that up with a superb effort with the bat.
  • The Heat looked in trouble after losing opening pair Joe Denly and Chris Lynn inside the first three overs but Marnus Labuschagne’s 32 steadied the ship before a brilliant unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of 92 between Sam Heazlett (74*) and Jimmy Peirson (43*) sealed the victory.

THE PREDICTION

Perth Scorchers face a big task ahead of them if they want to qualify for the BBL|10 final after they were well and truly outplayed by reigning champions Sydney Sixers in their Qualifier clash. They get a second bite at the cherry but must show huge improvements on their performance from that nine-wicket loss. They have also lost home advantage because of the lockdown in Perth with this game set to take place at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Standing in their way is an in-form Brisbane Heat who have won four consecutive matches, their latest a hugely impressive victory over Sydney Thunder. Their bowling attack showed they can cause some real problems but they will need to be at their best again with the Scorchers’ batting line-up capable of doing serious damange on their day. Both teams are capable of coming out on top here but with the pair capable of going big, there should be plenty of runs scored with the match set to contain over 324.5.
