THE PREDICTION

Derbyshire come into this on the back of a stalemate at Chester-le-Street against Durham. That was their successive draw to start their season and they haven’t really been outplayed in any of them - they were completely on top against Worcestershire as they ran out of time with their opposition 193-8 chasing over 400. The standout performance for Derby so far this season is that of leg-spinning all-rounder Matt Critchley; he has taken 13 wickets, the most for Derbyshire and is their leading run-scorer with 449 runs.

They come up against a Nottinghamshire who extended their first-class winless streak with a draw against Worcestershire last week. They haven’t won a four-day game since June 2018; an astonishing record that hasn’t really been close to ending this season. They were asked to follow-on last weekend against Worcester and an unbeaten 236-run first-wicket partnership managed to force a draw. A wonderful match for Haseeb Hameed in which he scored twin centuries and batted for more balls than anyone since that data has been collected for County Championship cricket.

It is difficult to back an away victory given that record but, quite frankly, the have to win one soon. Carrying on that momentum from Hameed and his opening partner Ben Slater would seem like the best time to capitalise.
