WHO ARE THE LEADING MEDAL CONTENDERS?

The world record holder of the women’s 200m freestyle is Federica Pellegrini of Italy, who set the time to beat five times in a row across 2008 and 2009. The Commonwealth Games record is Taylor Ruck of Canada, which was set at the 2018 event in Gold Coast. Since then, Ruck has achieved two Olympic medals in two relay events in Tokyo.

She will be up gunning for gold in this event, once more, but the comfortable favourite is Australia’s Ariarne Titmus. The 21 year-old from Launceston in Tasmania won the 200m and 400m freestyle Olympic gold in Tokyo last summer.

TSZ’S PREDICTION

Titmus took a break after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but she returned to excellent form in May 2022, setting the world record for the long course 400m freestyle, breaking Katie Ledecky’s record in 2016. She has stated she is ‘feeling good’ ahead of the games and is firm favourite to take gold in this event.

TSZ Tip: ARIARNE TITMUS (AUSTRALIA) TO WIN
