THE LOWDOWN

Mexico’s WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt (37-1, 33 KOs) is making the seventh defence of the title which he captured just over four years ago from Francisco Vargas. “El Alacrán” has an excellent KO record in the professional ranks with 89% of his triumphs coming inside of the distance – this includes wins via stoppage in each of his last five title fights.

Oscar Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs) is aiming to become a two-weight world champion with a victory against his fellow Mexican Berchelt. Valdez had a successful six fight winning streak as the WBO featherweight champion between 2016 and 2019 before he vacated the belt and opted to move up a weight division. He has claimed back-to-back wins at super featherweight – the most recent of which was a 10th round TKO victory against Jayson Velez in July 2020.

THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thrilling contest between two exciting Mexican fighters and there is plenty of pride at stake as well as Berchelt’s WBC super featherweight belt. The champion starts as the favourite and it is hard to disagree with that opinion due to his string of devastating performances over the last few years. Valdez is not without a chance of course; he has proven his class on many occasions - and he has yet to be beaten in his professional career - but the former WBO featherweight champion is going to find it extremely difficult to keep that unbeaten record intact against such a formidable opponent. Berchelt is tipped to add another KO to his tally by stopping Valdez in the second half of the fight.
