THE LOWDOWN

Irish star Katie Taylor (17-0, 6 KO) is defending her WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight belts against Natasha Jonas on Saturday night at Manchester Arena, live on Sky Sports Box Office. The Bray Bomber has a perfect record in the professional ranks with 17 wins from 17 bouts – the most recent of which was a victory via the judge’s scorecards against Miriam Gutierrez last November in London. That was the second of two bouts for Taylor in 2020, she also outpointed Belgian fighter Delfine Persoon when they met in August.

Natasha Jonas (9-1-1, 7KOs) may have come up just short when she challenged Terri Harper for the WBC and IBO female super-featherweight titles last August but she could certainly hold her head up high after a tremendous contest which ended in a draw. The Liverpudlian was originally hoping for a rematch but as that was not forthcoming, she made the decision to move up in weight and now takes on Katie Taylor in a mouth-watering match-up.

THE PREDICTION

Katie Taylor and Natasha Jonas are no strangers of course as they shared the ring previously in the amateur ranks – they famously met at the London 2012 Olympics when Taylor defeated Jonas in the quarter-finals en route to a gold medal. Many years have passed since then, and now they are going head-to-head as professionals, but the same outcome looks likely again with Taylor having the edge. The undisputed lightweight champion is a class act, she is tipped to rise to the occasion and claim her 18th successive victory as a professional. It is worth noting that nine of Taylor’s last 11 wins have come via the judges’ scorecards so there could be some value in opting for her to win on points in you are having a bet on the outcome.
