THE LOWDOWN
WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada (41-3, 28 KOs) is looking for revenge having lost on points against Roman Gonzalez all the way back in 2012. The Mexican fighter’s career has gone from strength to strength since that defeat, as he has claimed 15 wins from 16 bouts. The only blemish on his record in that aforementioned sequence was a loss against Thailand’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai – and he went on to avenge that defeat in their rematch.
Roman Gonzalez (50-2, 41 KOs) went on to win 12 bouts in a row after defeating Esrtrada in 2012 but he saw his unbeaten record ended by Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in 2017 and the Thai fighter went on to win their rematch also. Many had written off 'Chocolatito' after that pair of defeats but the Nicaraguan star has reeled off four consecutive wins and he comes into this bout as the WBA (super) super flyweight champion.
THE PREDICTION
This long-awaited rematch between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Gonzalez promises to be an enthralling contest. Gonzalez came out on top when they met all the way back in 2012 but that was obviously a long time ago and if you take their recent performances into account then Estrada might well have the edge on this occasion. One can’t entirely rule out the chances of 'Chocolatito' of course as he has proven during his illustrious career what a supremely talented competitor, but he is probably not at the peak of his powers these days. Estrada is tipped to claim victory via the judges’ scorecards.
