THE LOWDOWN

Unbeaten WBC and WBO light-welterweight champion Jose Ramirez (26-0, 17 KO) first became a world title holder when he defeated Amir Imam for the vacant WBC light-welterweight belt in 2018, he went on to add the WBO title to his collection when he stopped reigning champion Maurice Hooker in the sixth round of their bout in July 2019. The Californian born boxer’s win against Viktor Postol in August 2020 is his only contest since that victory against Hooker.

Scotland’s Josh Taylor (17-0, 13 KO) holds the WBA and IBF titles at light-welterweight and has done so since 2019 when he claimed both belts on his way to victory in the World Boxing Super Series tournament. First, he defeated IBF champion Ivan Baranchyk on points in May 2019 and then followed it up with a win via the judges’ scorecards against WBA champion Regis Prograis in October of the same year. Taylor’s only taste of action since 2019 came last September when stopped Apinun Khongsong in the opening round of their bout.

THE PREDICTION

This is a very rare occasion in which all of the titles in a division are up for grabs for the winner and as both boxers also possess unbeaten records the stakes could not be higher. It naturally goes without saying that Ramirez and Taylor are exceptional fighters, so this is a contest which should not be missed – even if you are just a casual observer of the sport. Taylor starts as the favourite with the bookies, a case can certainly be made for Ramirez though, so picking an outright winner is a tricky task. If you are considering a bet, the odds quoted for the fight to last the full 12 rounds look appealing enough to make that a good value option.
