THE LOWDOWN

GERVONTA DAVIS

  • Davis extended his incredible unbeaten record in July by finishing Ricardo Nunes in the second round to defend his WBA super featherweight title for a second time.
  • Davis has ferocious power and killer instinct, finishing 21 out of his 22 wins, and now steps up to lightweight for the vacant WBA title.
  • Davis is only 25 years-old and continues to improve, with this the biggest fight of his career, but he has valuable experience sparring with Gamboa in the past.

YURIORKIS GAMBOA

  • After suffering the second loss of his career Gamboa has won four on the bounce and is coming off a knockout over Roman Martinez, also in July.
  • Gamboa is a former dominant featherweight champion reigning from 2009-2012. He then stepped up to lightweight in 2013 and won the WBA interim title against Darleys Perez but suffered his first loss to the unbeaten Terence Crawford the following year.
  • Gamboa is vastly experienced with 32 fights which have come off the back of a decorated amateur career with his biggest accomplishment coming at the Athens 2004 Olympics, winning gold as a flyweight.

THE PREDICTION

Davis has steamrolled through his opponents and will be the favourite against the 37-year-old. However, Gamboa will be his biggest test and has the skill and experience to take him into deep waters if he weathers the early rounds. That said, if Davis displays more patience, his extra explosiveness at lightweight may be too much for the Cuban.

Winner: Davis via KO/TKO
