THE LOWDOWN

Gennadiy Golovkin (40-1-1) makes his long-awaited return to the ring after over a year without a fight and he is well-fancied to make a successful comeback. Following his loss to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the Kazakh has enjoyed back-to-back wins with his unanimous decision victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko an eye-catching success as he collected the vacant IBF and IBO World middleweight titles.

Unbeaten Kamil Szeremeta (21-0-0) has his work cut out to extend his run without a defeat. This is a huge step up in class for the Pole and his lack of power is likely to be too much to overcome. He has recorded just five KOs in his 21 fights to date and despite possessing the ability to outbox those he failed to stop, that is unlikely to be possible against a man like Golovkin whose chin will withstand even the heaviest of shots and has shown throughout his career he has the brilliant technical ability to manoeuvre his way around the ring.

THE PREDICTION

Gennadiy Golovkin is undoubtedly one of the greatest boxers of his generation and perhaps all-time but his glittering career is reaching its climax with the 38-year-old surely not having much more to offer the sport he has served so well. Despite his age, it does not mean he cannot compete at the highest level still, nor does it mean that he cannot opt to fight for several years to come. He may want one final crack at Canelo Alvarez to cap off what would be an epic trilogy with the Mexican the only man to beat Golovkin in his career to date. The time out of the ring may have served the Kazakh well to allow him to reenergise and refocus to ensure he gets the most out of the back end of his career. That does not bode well for his opponent in this contest with Kamil Szeremeta facing a huge step up in class in his first world title bout. He has never faced anyone close to the quality of Golovkin and despite boasting an unbeaten record, that looks under serious threat here. Golovkin will want to make a statement to announce his return to the ring and an impressive showing will certainly open the door for much bigger fights. His power and accuracy is likely to be too much for the Pole and he can stop his opponent in the first half of the fight.

Prediction: Golovkin to win in rounds 1-6
